How to Care for 100% Human Hair Extensions

Human hair extensions are an investment, for you and for your client. The good news: with the right care routine, that investment pays off in extensions that stay soft, shiny, and reusable for months. Here's what every client (and every stylist recommending aftercare) should know.

Washing

Extensions should be washed less frequently than natural hair: 2 to 3 times a week is usually plenty. Use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, apply conditioner mid-shaft to ends only (avoiding the bonds or wefts directly), and always brush gently before washing to avoid tangling. Wash in a downward motion rather than scrubbing in circles, which can cause matting at the base.

Drying & Styling

Air-drying is best whenever possible. If heat styling is needed, always apply a heat protectant first and keep tools under 350°F. Because it's 100% human hair, it holds curl and styling beautifully, but treating it gently extends its life significantly.

Brushing

Use a soft-bristle or loop brush designed for extensions, and always start from the ends, working upward to avoid pulling on the bonds or wefts. Brushing 2–3 times a day helps prevent tangling and keeps the hair looking fresh between washes.

Sleeping & Daily Wear

Loosely braid hair or tie it in a low, soft ponytail before bed to prevent tangling overnight. A silk or satin pillowcase also helps reduce friction and keeps both the extensions and natural hair smoother for longer.

Maintenance Appointments

Regular maintenance visits matter as much as home care. K-Tip bonds should be checked every 6–8 weeks as natural hair grows out, and tape-ins typically need repositioning on the same schedule. Genius Weft and hand-tied wefts should be checked in periodically to ensure the track stays secure and comfortable.
