Fall Hair Extension Prep: Get Your Clients Ready for the Holidays

October is when extension appointments start filling up. Clients want to look good for holiday parties, family photos, and everything in between, and a lot of them are also ready to change up their color for fall. Here's how to get ahead of it.

Check the shade again

Summer hair is rarely the same color it was in spring. Sun, pool time, and a few months of regrowth all shift a client's base. Before you reinstall or move up extensions, hold the shade against their roots in daylight again instead of assuming last season's match still works. Clients who lightened over the summer often want to go deeper for fall, which is a good moment to look at a richer brown or a rooted shade that grows out softly.

Get holiday installs booked early

November and December fill fast. Tape-ins take about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours and K-Tips take 2 to 3.5 hours, so a full holiday schedule adds up quickly. Start the conversation now. Clients who book in October get their pick of time slots, and you avoid squeezing in installs between holiday parties and your own plans.

Time maintenance before the big events

Tape-ins and K-Tips need a move-up or check every 6 to 8 weeks. If a client has a wedding, party, or photo shoot coming up, count backward from that date and schedule the maintenance visit a week or two before, so the hair looks fresh and settled by the event.

Cold weather care

Dry air, hats, and scarves are hard on extensions. Remind clients to brush gently from the ends up, keep hats and scarves loose at the bonds or wefts, and use a leave-in conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. Heat tools should stay under 350°F with a heat protectant, and a silk or satin pillowcase helps cut down on static and tangling overnight.

Stock up before the rush

The worst time to run out of a shade is the week before Thanksgiving. Look at what you installed most this year, check what's low, and reorder your core shades early so you're not waiting on a restock during your busiest weeks.

A little prep in October makes the holiday rush a lot smoother, for you and for your clients.
